Beginning his career at Bridgend Athletics, Byrne played for a number of clubs including Tondu and Llanelli Scarlets before he signed for the Magnum title winners the Ospreys. He plays fullback and regularly plays at number 14.
In 2005, following a knee injury Byrne made his Wales senior debut against New Zealand. 2006 was a pivotal year for Byrne’s career, regularly starting in the RBS Six Nations championship, he toured Argentina and also signed with the Ospreys. His first season, 2006 -2007 saw Byrne successfully score 11 tries for the club.
At the beginning of 2008 he was chosen as part of Warren Gatland’s 28 strong squad for the RBS Six Nations championships. Byrne played in every match of the grand slam winning campaign and was awarded Man of the Match for his performance against Italy.
Earlier this year, Byrne signed a long term contract with the Ospreys which will see him remain at the liberty stadium until the end of 2011/2012 season, he has just been named in the squad for the 2008 Invesco Perpetual series.
